PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is designed for participants of prior cCWCS Chemistry in Art workshops who have used their prior workshop experience in revising their teaching at the interface of chemistry and art. Applicants must profile in their online application how they have used previous workshop materials in their teaching.



 Sunday evening: Reception
Monday-Thursday: Full days


This workshop will give participants hands-on experience in the methods used by conservation scientists and museum curators analysis for the technical analysis and preservation of art. Analytical instrumentation will include infrared, colorimetry, optical/fluorescence microscopy, portable x-ray fluorescence, and chromatography. Technical, scientific analysis of paintings, textiles, photographs, metals, and polymers will guide preservation and cleaning techniques that will be instructed in the workshop. Participants will also tour local conservation laboratories/museums. Ethical issues involved in the conservation, restoration, and preservation of art and artifacts will be emphasized throughout the workshop.
